Can this heatwave hold out until Saturday? Lets hope so as Streamline have laid on a hospitality tent complete with free food & drink for the competitors - some may never leave it! |
With defending champions Steven & JIm unable to play perhaps a couple of new names could go on the cup? And with Dougie at the Island Games there should even be food left for the late starters!
The draw can be seen on this page.

Dewar Spence

Sam fills his first senior cup.
Phew what a scorcher.. and that was just Sam's score in the first round. Yep young Sam Parkinson produced his best ever competition round on Sunday morning shooting a 72 gross, nett 55 to the lead the way in the Dewar Spence. A lead of 'only' 4 shots from Kenny Gunn with a host of low 60's behind that.
It was asking a bit much for a repeat in the second round but to Sam's credit he still managed a nett 67 which proved to be just enough to win, just! Playing partner (and short game genius) Angus Sutherland added a 67 gross to his 68 of the morning to finish with a nett total of 123 one behind Sam. Davie Garson was best of the 125s to claim second nett on countback with Olly Sinclair & Kenny Gunn picking up the minor prizes while Shane Stanger claimed second gross behind Angus with his 68 & 71.
Not only was this a memorable day in young Sam's golfing career but it also saw a new milestone in trickshot golf achieved by Gary Johnston (see I'm a bad golfer...').
Thanks must go to Robert Gatt for providing the excellent lunch for all 35 competitors simultaneously and also to the Ray and DK for the course presentation.

Club Championships

Think sitting on that rock with piles is sore Doug, just wait until Ann Heddle gets hold of you for runing her flowerbed. Or just 'bed' as Melvin calls it .
After some fairly pedestrian Club Championships over the past 10 years this one was a real humdinger!
In sunny but breezy conditions scoring was tricky but not impossible on the firm but excellently prepared course. Nett scores in the fifties from Lucky Bill & Eoin (S)Harcus in the first round led the nett with Dougie Slater & Brian Corsie's 69s leading the way in the gross.
Eoin added a 64 nett to his first round 59 for a 123 total. Billy could only manage a 67 to go with his 58 for 125 and was pipped on countback by Eric Sutherland who rolled back the years and rolled in the putts for a 60 to go with his 65. This meant his playing partner Eoin had won his first ever Nett Club Champion with Eric second.
And speaking of rolling in the putts defending champion Denis Harvey's putter had heeded it's warning and was warming up nicely with 'rakers' going in at the 5th and 8th and a chip in at 9 was followed by a slam dunk birdie putt at 15 and it started to look like it was his day! A 66 to go with his 72 looked a winning total. Not so fast Mr Harvey... as Stromness Open champion Dougie's flatstick had also been working some magic gaining him another 69 and meaning at long last - A PLAYOFF!
It had been many years since the last one and even then that hardly counts as Marcus was in it! Sorry Marcus...
The format is they play the first 4 holes and if it's still tied then sudden death. A format the R&A copied off us for the Open Championship. Two good tee shots at the first and Den found the front edge with his approach. Dougie fired a great second into 5ft and rolled it in for birdie to take a one shot lead after Den had 2 putted for par. Two good chips at the second saw it halved in par. The 3rd saw Dougie short left and Denis on the green with their tee shots. A chance for Denis to make up the shot? Nope, Dougie chipped it stiff while Denis's birdie attempt shaved the hole.
Local bookmaker delighted when rank outsider wins! |
So down the 4th with Doug -1 and Denis level - good stuff this! After a short drive Denis hit a great approach onto the green 20ft away. Dougie's approach came up short left leaving a very tricky chip to the pin tucked away in the bottom right of the green. But as with his chips at 2 &3 he rolled it down to a couple of feet leaving Denis needing to hole his putt to continue. A good effort from Den just slide past meaning Dougie had claimed his first Club Champion title but credit to both players for one of the best playoffs many had witnessed. |
Thanks go to Kris (Northlink) & Julia (Julia's Bistro) for presenting the prizes to all the winners. Also thanks to Ray & DK for their work preparing the course for the weekend - great work guys!
